Do I need any experience to start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Not at all. The majority of people who walk into our Greensboro academy have never trained before. Our beginner classes are built specifically for first-timers, and our instructors will guide you through the fundamentals step by step in a safe, welcoming environment. You'll never be thrown into something you're not ready for.

What should I wear to my first class?

For your first BJJ class, athletic clothing like a t-shirt and shorts or leggings works fine — just avoid anything with zippers, buttons, or pockets, which can catch fingers or toes during training. If you have a Gi (uniform), bring it; if not, we'll help you get set up. For cardio boxing, comfortable workout clothes and athletic shoes are all you need.

How old does my child have to be to start martial arts?

We offer kids classes starting around age 3, with groups organized by age (roughly 3–5, 6–9, and 10–14) so your child trains with peers at a similar stage. This lets us keep instruction, pacing, and energy appropriate for each age group. If you're unsure which group fits your child, reach out and we'll point you to the right class.

What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi BJJ?

Gi BJJ is trained in the traditional uniform, which allows grips on the collar and sleeves and tends to be more methodical and technical. No-Gi is trained in athletic wear without those grips, making it faster-paced and more scramble-heavy. We offer both in Greensboro, and training the two together makes you a more complete, adaptable grappler. Beginners are welcome in either.

Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu good for self-defense?

Yes — it's one of the most practical self-defense systems available. Because BJJ is built on leverage and technique rather than size or strength, it teaches you how to control and neutralize a larger opponent, including from the ground where many real confrontations end up. It's a core reason so many of our students, from kids to adults, choose to train.

Will BJJ or cardio boxing get me in shape?

Both are excellent full-body workouts. BJJ builds functional strength, endurance, and mobility while you learn a skill, so it rarely feels like a "workout" even though it is one. Cardio boxing is a high-energy calorie burner that improves conditioning and relieves stress. Many members find they stick with training far longer than a traditional gym because it's engaging and social.

Is martial arts safe for kids?

Safety is our priority in every kids class. Our coaches teach control and respect alongside technique, classes are structured and closely supervised, and children train with peers their own age and size. Beyond physical safety, our program is a positive, confidence-building environment — many parents come to us specifically for the discipline, focus, and anti-bullying benefits.

Can adults and kids train at the same time?

In many cases, yes — our schedule includes adult classes that run alongside kids classes, so parents can train while their child is on the mats. It's a popular option for families who want to make the most of their time and train together. Check our schedule page for the specific class times that overlap.

How often should I train to see progress?

Most students who train two to three times per week see steady, noticeable progress. That said, consistency matters more than volume — even showing up regularly once or twice a week builds real skill over time. Our Greensboro schedule offers enough class options throughout the week to fit training around a busy life.
